the green room

The aptly-named Rainbow Bridge.  Odaiba, Tokyo, Japan.  (2011).

In the Sofia Coppola film, Lost in Translation, there's this memorable sequence where Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson cross the Rainbow Bridge in the backseat of a taxi cab after an unforgettable night out in Tokyo.  It's maybe the most poignant scene in a movie full of them.  There's beauty in the seemingly impossible intersection of the complex themes at play ... culture shock, isolation, discovery, friendship and, ultimately, love ... all spun in motion against the electric backdrop of a cityscape like no other.

The night we cross the Rainbow Bridge is the last one we'll spend together on the road.   There's a tinge of traveller's regret in the feeling that we're running out of time.  Maybe, we're just fatigued more than anything.  But crisp, cold, and imperfect as things are, Tokyo is - beautiful.

There's no other place I'd rather be.  There's no other person I'd rather be with.

Months later, when the magic's excused itself and disappeared, I'll remember this.  Maybe it's true that there's an inherent loneliness in being the last to hold on to shared memories, happy as they may be.  Because for all that we keep close to dispel the notion that it was merely a meaningless intersection of events, the truth is, we're now a half a world away.

Hope, faith, luck, and love.

Maybe, on another Tokyo night.
