As the dog days of summer twilight from their zenith, new posts roll off the production line at a lazy, idle pace - much to the chagrin of the editor. Well, sometimes, there just isn't much to say. But in this stop-and-go summer, before long it'll be time to move again ... and, in that, maybe something significant will become of it somewhere, somehow.

A road trip (back) west, begins tomorrow.

rocket man

Early morning in Terminal 2 at Københavns Lufthavne (Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport). (2008).

Summer's last scheduled destination involves the travel of some distance; this time, it's eight time zones away to the open spaces of western Canada. Door-to-door, the trip clocks in at just under 29.5 hours, which includes quality time spent on all buses, trains, flights, and a sleepover on the shiny floor of Copenhagen's Kastrup Airport.

At check-in, I ask (beg?) the Scandinavian Airlines ticket agent for an upgrade to business class. Can't be done, she says, but as consolation an orange-red, Star Alliance priority tag is attached to my checked bag.

"Well, at least we'll ensure your luggage gets the first class treatment," she winks.

On the other end, at Saskatoon's sleepy John G. Diefenbaker International* Airport, my luggage rolls off Carousel 1 (of 2) among the first in line. Nice. In this starfish and waffles summer, we'll take any small victories we can get.

* Apparently, a twice-daily Northwest flight to Minneapolis is enough make an airport qualify as "international." I love western Canadian optimism ...
